Report from Last Weekend: 3 Mount Eruptions and an Earthquake

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The past weekend from Saturday, May 11 to Sunday, May 12, saw Mount Sinabung, Mount Anak Krakatau (son of Krakatoa), and Mount Agung mildly erupt. There was also one report of a magnitude 5.0 earthquake in the southwest region of the Sunda Strait.

“The earthquake was not felt and did not affect the population nor did it affect manmade structures,” said Tony Agus Wijaya, head of the Bandung Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) on Sunday.

Moreover, the report coming from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) in Bandung states that North Sumatra’s Mount Sinabung erupted for 33 minutes on Saturday, May 11, at 20:39 western Indonesia time (WIB).

The level IV alert status mountain is currently a no-go zone for a radius of 3 kilometers in its northern and western region, 4 kilometers in its southern area, and 7 kilometers from its south and southeast region.

Mount Anak Krakatau in Lampung erupted on Sunday, May 12, at 10:03 WIB which according to the PVMBG lasted 10 minutes and 42 seconds. The mountain currently bears Level II alert status and has a no-go perimeter zone 2 kilometers from its crater.

Mount Agung in Bali erupted on Sunday, May 12 at 22:29 WIB that lasted 2 minutes and 16 seconds even though local observatory station did not see the mountain producing ash clouds. Bali’s most notable volcanic mountain is at alert Level III.

BMKG also reported of a 5.0 magnitude earthquake originating 10 kilometers in the Sunda Strait on Sunday, but fortunately did not trigger the local tsunami alarm and was mainly not felt inland.
